Amore nell’antica Cina

Invece oggi l’apertura d’animo dà luogo all’arroganza,
L’animo libero dà vittoria in guerra
E sicurezza in pace.
Un tale animo il Cielo concede
A chi vuole salvare».

A Treasure All For You - Da una lezione sulla comunicazione per Wassim Nehme

“A man lived on an island, cultivating small grapevines and some olive trees and tending his flock of goats. He used to climb uphill with his animals, up to a grassy knoll, from where the view was completely open to the sea and, while the goats grazed, he would be seated on a flat boulder, admiring the faraway horizon and thinking of his destiny and the possibilities that he would like to have for his life.
One day he was sleeping on the boulder and he had a dream. He dreamed of a city where there were two mainlands divided by an arm of the sea, with a bridge above. A voice told him that directly behind the first pillar of the bridge, there was a treasure waiting just for him.
He kept having this dream for some consecutive days, until the shepherd decided to give it credit. He gathered information from some sailors who approached the island to refill their water supply, he borrowed some money from other shepherds, entrusted his flock to them, and left.
He found the actual city he had dreamed of, with the arm of the sea and the bridge. He spotted the first pillar and he circled it, but…unfortunately he found a beggar sleeping there. While he was thinking about how he could move the beggar away in order to find his treasure, the man awoke.
They began to chat and the beggar asked him what had brought him there. The shepherd hesitated briefly, but then told him about the dream. The beggar broke into laughter and said, “And for this reason you came here?”
“Certainly!” responded the shepherd. “A treasure all for me - I am very interested in that!”
“Hah!” said the beggar. “What should I do then, since every night I dream that far from here, there is an island cultivated with grapevines and olive trees and inhabited by goats, where there is a grassy knoll and a flat boulder? A voice insists on telling me that right under that boulder I will find a treasure all for me!”

This story may be found in various versions and with many interpretations. I prefer to end it here and interpret it as simply as this: You are your own personal treasure. The important thing is to be able to recognize it.

I Was Asked "What Does Shen Really Mean To You?"

I was asked, "Today, after many years of study and research, what really is your idea of Shen?”
Let us examine the character Shen:
The character on the left can be translated as omen.
The character on the right represents two hands that welcome a ray of light. By extension, we could say that the appearance of the light of Shen announces the arrival of a new life.
Ling Shu, chapter 8: "When the two Jing come together, they unite, giving rise to life, this is said to be Shen.”
Su Wen chapter 23: "The Shen dwells in the heart and is the basis of the psycho-emotional vitality of the individual."
At the moment of conception, in addition to the energy transmitted by the parents, something else takes rests, dwells, in the individual: this is the Shen. The term Shen in Western texts, is usually defined as the words Mind, Spirit, or Mind-Spirit. Shen, in a broad sense, is an extremely pure and immaterial level of energy, belonging to the Heavens, and is therefore the most Yang of the Three Treasures (Jing-Qi-Shen).
This vibration is imprinted in the individual at the time of conception; it is the Heaven in Man, a fragment of the infinite in the finite.
"Shen is Yin-Yang that cannot be measured." Shen therefore, being Yin-Yang that cannot be measured represents on a human level the intangible aspects of the individual: psychological, emotional and spiritual. Shen also represents his awareness, meaning the ability to understand (and accept) things exactly for what they are, maintaining an attitude of calm and mental clarity.
The Da Cheng states, about the attitude to have while treating a person:
"In the mind of the practitioner, there must not be a desire, but only a receptive and accepting attitude, and only then does the mind-heart (Xin) becomes Shen" (p. 120).
But, ultimately, all of you ask me, "How do you define Shen?"
Shen is the light in the eyes, the smile of every morning, the joy of living, the positivity in life. The Buddhists call it 'compassion', the Daoists 'right action', the zen 'attention', Westerners 'empathy', I, Pino, call it 'being there'. Really be with the person, in the here and now of the moment. Then the mind opens to becoming, the movement glides, the energy flows freely, the boundaries blur, you and I become 'us' even in the knowledge of each other's individuality, and then the therapeutic encounter becomes creativity, vibrant dialogue, sharing.
Who looks at you sees the composition of music, harmony and energy that surrounds and involves even the spectator and becomes an active part of this creation.
Then, and only then, can we truly grasp, beyond any intellectualism, the wonder of who we are, the potential that each of us contains within itself.
Because, as an old legend says, we are the fifth dream, the fifth path on the way to the fifth fulfillment, the fifth ecstasy. What is this "fulfillment", this 'ecstasy'? Humans walk the path of spirituality dreaming of becoming enlightened.
This is their dream.
And we are here on this planet, in this skin, in this millennium, exactly for this reason: to make our dream, the dream of all human beings, become a reality.

Dao-sheng, sconvolto dagli avvenimenti esterni, aveva trascurato questi insegnamenti.

“A LESSON FROM HEART TO HEART” by Sara Tancredi, Psychologist

Last Saturday I had the pleasure and honor of participating as an outside guest at the lesson on The Subtle Energy of The Heart, taught by Pino and Wassim at the Ego Center in Parma. What struck me the most was the perception I had of the deep care that the two masters, together with the other teachers, transmitted during the lesson. I saw not only teachers, researchers, experts in groups conduction, but I saw two men sharing their stories, with a great union and compassion.
I saw the story of two worlds intertwined in a great friendship  between Pino and Wassim. I saw their eyes clear and joyful, as antennas that perceive the finer nuances of the wounds of those who turn to them, because they first cured the wounds in their hearts.
My inner baby/child would say I had seen a family; my adult part would say I've seen two masters and one path; my psychologist part would say that I've seen a method of curing and personal growth of great consistency and power, that unites the body to the mind and spirit. All this wrapped by Shen in a soft, wise and peaceful embrace, the embrace of the awareness that touches the whole field of experience with loving kindness.
The experience that touched me most during this day was to perceive this flow of energy, which filled my heart, causing it to overflow with emotion and love.
Through computer software and a sensor attached to my ear, I had the chance to try the test on the inner coherence of the heart, created by a group of researchers from the HeartMath Institute. I had never experienced something like this before, which gave me the opportunity to reflect on some things. First of all, it showed me that showing your heart as it is is not something simple and immediate.
How many times do we put in place so much resistance to protect this sensitive part? To be there, in front of many people who I didn't know, with my heart naked and exposed was a wonderful experience.  Together, we were able to observe how the subtle energy field of the heart can positively affect the internal coherence of the people around you. In truth, there is no need for sensors to show the heart as it is, just decide to make yourself available to show it.
For this, I would like to thank the students of the classes that were present on Sunday morning, for opening their hearts by sharing stories and pieces of truth that were at times very uncomfortable. Thanks to them I understood how any truth and its discomfort is part of being human.
Sometimes when we suffer, we believe that the pain we feel is ours only, that no one can understand, and we imprison ourselves in cages of solitude. Opening our hearts to each other instead we discover something very precious, something that concerns the totality of human suffering, and that is that it is universal. This gives us hope and comfort, helps us to understand and accommodate the flow of life.
I would like to thank the person who was willing to let me experience a massage with 'Shen Touch', which allowed me to integrate the experience up to that time in depth. During these two days I learned that acceptance, integration and liberation from suffering pass through the opening of ones own heart, first toward the suffering itself, then toward others, then toward life. The energy flow of the heart, Shen, does not see the barriers created by the shape, it sees only our human essence.
With gratitude, affection and joy for having met you.

About the American Bioenergetic Therapists from Wassim Nehme - posted by Elisa Mamiani

The arrival of Wassim Nehme and the American therapists that he taught and qualified, who spent 10 days with us in theoretical and practical study, moved many of the Italian therapists to write about their impressions from this experience. I've been asked to share their writings on my blog, especially as we have more than 800 readers in the US, in addition to Wassim's students.
In the next days, I will try to satisfy all their requests.
“There once was a young man…he lived in the east…far, far from here…he left his land and his home and arrived here. He studied medicine and martial arts. He came to know his Master. His Master spoke of Tao, of Chinese Energetics, of Bioenergetics…and spoke also of Shen, and of love… The young man came to know his lover and with her he left. He went far, far to the west…and there he spoke of Tao, of Chinese Energetics, of Bioenergetics, and of Shen: the young man had become a Master.”
This that you have just read is not a made-up story: it is the story of Wassim Nehme, Bioenergetic and Shen Therapist, originally from Lebanon, who heard this message from his Master Pino Ferroni, here in Italy and took it to the USA. In Vermont, he and his wife Elisabeth founded “Green Mountain Shen & Bioenergetics”, where the work he started here continues.
Recently we, the Ego Center therapists and I, had the opportunity to know our American colleagues: together we shared days in which we all listened to various theoretical lessons from Pino about Shen, and exchanged “Emotional Sensitivity” massage.
Most of the Italian therapists didn't speak English and the American therapists didn't speak Italian - during the theoretical lessons, Wassim interpreted, yet during the massage, we all spoke the same language. Our hearts opened to each other, and our souls spoke, without needing to open our mouths.
Over many years I've heard infinite definitions of the word Shen, but only in this occasion did I really learn the significance: Shen is the warm welcome from Pino that forms the base of his work; Shen is the pledge and the will of Wassim, and also his courage, to share this teaching he received in another part of the world; Shen is me, my colleagues (and future colleagues), Italian and American, that believe in what we do and who work to be this small flame that Pino always speaks of - that one day will become a huge blaze that illuminates the darkness of our days.
For me, Shen also means THANKFULNESS to Pino and Wassim for all their work that has given me the inspiration to grow further in my work in humanistic naturopathy, as a therapist in Emotional SensitivityË, and as a teacher in Shen TrainingË. I want to also thank Virginia, Jill, Christina and Laurie for giving me the chance to know their experiences that have reinforced in me the knowledge that this is the right path.

With all my heart, Elisa Mamiani

A Lesson on Communication

“How did it happen that the four American therapists have made a radical metamorphosis in just three days of Shen Training®?”
I was asked this in the days following Wassim's visit. Unfortunately, despite the subsequent explanations written by Christina in her letter, many of my students hadn't grasped the essence of the work accomplished with these therapists. In fact, the merit of the 'Shen Touch' was, in this work of openness to new expressive possibilities, minimal compared to the theoretical message about Shen that accompanied all the meeting-lessons during their three-day training. So I decided to answer their questions, starting with the Chinese character for “communication”:
Ideogram for communication
The Chinese character for communication is complex: it is the result of the ideograms, which complement each other, referring to the following meanings: ear, eyes, full attention, and the heart.
Meanwhile, a clarification: talking very often does not mean communicating. By communication, I intend also sharing the emotional state of how each topic affects me.
The Chinese ideogram character “ears” makes us understand how communication requires careful listening, attentive not only to the subject, to the syntax and semantics of the words, but also to the symbolism that they contain. Listening, therefore, in this view, becomes a real art.
The character “eyes” makes us perfectly understand another of the basic requirements for perfect listening: the congruence between the spoken words and facial expressions, and the unconscious body.
The character “heart” (at the bottom) makes us understand that the ability of empathic listening is necessary to understand the emotions and feelings that it contains.
The character “one” (the horizontal line between eyes and heart) clearly specifies that ears (listening), eyes (sight) and heart (emotions) are the only things that make true communication truly real.
So, when the message that we pass to others also contains our personal experience, this is when the communication becomes a true and real message of Shen.
This is the most difficult thing to learn, to be a good communicators for groups of personal growth, because the discussions that we share must necessarily contain our own personal views, emotional experiences, good or painful as they are, and shared with the vibration of Shen of the heart. In this way for those who listen to us, our communication becomes also a message of a real life, a chance for the listeners to overcome their difficult times, as it was in its time for us.
Therefore communication-transmission has the ability to build a bridge between those who transmit a teaching and those who receive it, overcoming the eternal sense of separation from the daily life experience and from other people.
I read somewhere, about separation, these beautiful words:
"Even when the wave that breaks on the beach seems separated from the sea, it continues to be made of the same water. However, if we look at the waves, they change from moment to moment. If we look at the water, it never changes. Unfortunately, most often, we are not able to see the water, we only see the waves."
In conclusion, I want to add a portion of the tablet 64 of the Tao Te Ching: San Yuan - The three precious things:
“I have three precious things that I keep and cultivate:
The first is the opening of the mind (love, compassion, charity)
The second is the balanced dignity (modesty, temperance, moderation)
The third is the lack of ambition (do not put oneself above the other)
The opening of mind gives me courage,
The balanced dignity makes me generous,
The lack of ambition makes me a leader of men”.

Buona Pasqua

To Perceive the Potential - per le Operatrici USA

Wilhelm Reich and Alexander Lowen, the fathers of Bioenergetics, opened to the world the possibility of understanding the character (i.e. personality / behavioral problems) of the person not only through traditional psychotherapy but also through analyzing the body posture…
In these nearly 100 years that have passed since the Reichian intuitions, many body disciplines 'brought' the body to psychotherapy (paraphrasing the title of a book by Willy Pasini). Fritz Perls, one of the pioneers of Gestalt, states “There are bodies that we see screaming (and his screamed), others that speak strongly or simply speak, others that murmur, and still others simply whisper. If you will learn to perceive those that whisper, you will truly begin to help an innumerable number of people to overcome that subtle poison that every day undermines the quality of their life.”
In these last 40 years, I have taught you, and continue to teach you, with Shen Training® and Shen Touch, which I created, to try to speak to these bodies: at times it is an easy work, at times it is more difficult with the bodies that are content with 'life as it is', and need a lot of attention to perceive their underlying lament.
With one of the American therapists, to read her story in her eyes was quite simple, with the others, more obscured. But the most important step taken with them (and that we do with every person that comes to us) was for them to try to perceive the potential that was hidden within them.
This unfortunately cannot be technically taught but only transmitted - and this is the understanding that is the most subtle, fundamental, and defining.

I want to tell you a story:
“In the autumn of 1988, Jack Canfield was invited to hold a conference of self-love and maximum efficiency, at a gathering in Hong Kong.
What greatly struck him of the things he saw during this trip was the Buddha Temple in Bangkok, a very small temple that held and protected a Buddha statue made of gold, more than 9 feet high, weighing more than 2 tons, and valued at 196 million dollars!
“It was a vision that transmitted fear,” said Canfield. “A massive golden Buddha with a gentle appearance, but imposing as he smiled from above.”
Next to the statue there was a display case explaining the story: in 1957, some monks from a nearby monastery had to move a clay Buddha from their temple to a new site. The monastery itself had to be moved to make space for the construction of a new highway that would cross Bangkok. When the crane began to lift the gigantic idol, the weight was so great that the statue started to bend! On top of this, it started to rain. The head monk, preoccupied with not damaging the sacred Buddha, decided to place the statue on the ground and to cover it with a large tarp, to protect it from the rain.
Later that evening, the head monk went to check on the Buddha statue. He turned on a flashlight under the tarp to be sure that the Buddha was dry. When the light reached the crack of the bent area, the monk noticed a strange reflection. Looking more closely, he wondered if there was something under the clay. Slowly, slowly, the pieces of clay fell away, and the glow became more vivid and extensive. Many hours went by until at last the monk found himself face to face with the extraordinary pure golden Buddha.
Historians think that several hundred years before the monk's discovery, the Burmese army was about to invade Thailand (at that time called Siam).  The Siamese monks, understanding that their country would soon be invaded and controlled, covered the precious golden Buddha with a layer of clay, to ensure that their treasure would not be stolen by the invaders. Sadly, apparently the Burmese massacred all the inhabitants of the village, and all the Siamese monks, and their secret of the golden Buddha remained well-preserved and untouched until that fatal day in 1957.
“Returning home”, writes Canfield, “in the airplane I started to think to myself: we are all like the clay Buddha; covered in a hard crust made of fear, and yet, under each one of us there is a golden Buddha, or golden Christ, or golden Essence, which is our true self.”
At a certain point of our life, between the ages of 2 and 9 years of age, we start to cover our golden Essence, our natural self. More or less like the monk, not with a hammer or a scalpel, but with the 'Shen Touch', our homework now is to help the people that come to us to uncover their true essence, their true potential.
Our work is this and only this: after we have eliminated the primary cages that imprison us, we must begin to remove the armor that limits our emotions and our life, to discover that we are marvelously golden. Even better: made of jade!
This was the work that I did, essentially through the Shen lessons before the touch, with our American guests that continue to write to us, telling us how much indescribable value they are discovering in themselves every day.
Remember this splendid Indian quote and make it your own:
“The powder of rose petals belongs only to the maker of the essences”
La polvere di petali di rosa
appartiene soltanto
al fabbricante di essenze”
